But most of all, maybe we should stop judging and shaming each other and just be grateful we live in a country where we can date, love, and marry freely.

It’s a pretty dark view of something most of us know nothing about. For most of human history, it was normal and even expected for a younger woman to wind up with an older man. .) In fact, most of us probably need not look much further than our grandparents to see age gaps that would be considered scandalous today.

There are more examples of this than one could possibly count in history, art, poetry, music, and literature. Granted, this was often because a woman desired the financial security of an established husband, and in turn, men desired a youthful, fertile bride who could bear and rear his children.

But by and large, we live in a world of extended adolescence where males are not expected to be and act like men until much later than their fathers and grandfathers were.

And a lot of young women I know just don’t have the patience for these twenty-something “bros.” I’m not blaming the boys for this.

Maybe age-gap relationships are simply the logical outcome of a girl-power culture that has done so much to help propel women so far forward.

Either way, we might do well to remember that most of us wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the “scandalous” relationships of our ancestors.

Most of the encounters I’ve had with young men have left me feeling more like a career counselor or a babysitter than a wooed woman.
